1.
Stranded on this island, searching to fill my empty heart, to live and to feel. I found you watching the sun go down, like you saw your own life in the past. You cut me in half, now you see what's inside me owh love owh it's love-  My hands and legs are mine, my eyes and lips are mine, but I am not. I am yours. Like living in a dream that never ends. Too young, too old. But we are we not, we both are birds of paradise. I'll replace your first bad memories, time will always tell.  The whole island tells me so and makes sure it will be done.

The Fountain 03:03
Seven years we’ve been together but now it's gone and now it's done. Looking back when we chased the dream, crushing on your lips and crushing on my feet. All the tears that made a river. The mourning dove cooed in our ears. Now we know that love is moving to a better place on top of the fountain, the fountain. Say hello to both of your parents, let them know that we both have changed and older, grown older. In the shadow of the dying flames, we made promises that we were gonna try. Aphrodite is not in our stars, redefine the changes in my heart.
3.
Ambushed 04:00
Through the fire and the waves. No kind heart can be threatened. I am lucky cause I found it through your eyes. Now I’m coming back to where I should belong. No ceiling above me or heart inside the cage. Oh the shadow needs light just like how I need you. Here I am, I’m coming back to life. I remember when the loneliness ambush my night. Come to me with no warning, just like a tsunami. That’s when I’m at my wit’s end. Now those days have gone away, and I’m sailing to the west. It’s a whole new world ahead but it feels so familiar. Oh the shadow needs light, just like how I need you.  I'm coming back to breathe. I remember when the loneliness ambush my night. Come with no warning, just like a tsunami. That's when I’m at my wit’s end. Now those days have gone away, and the sun is coming up. Time for both of us to wait for the brave one to come.

Who you are from 9 to 5 is what the moon knows you. Why do you carry all that weight? That’s tragic. How come no one ever tries to found the dragon? They say "are you out of your mind?" Well, maybe. Floating in this sonic world Found silence in the crowd It is wonderful. So where does the time fly to? Did it fly to a warmer place? If it is so, can I fly with it? Just let me. Floating in this sonic world It’s getting harder to find the silence in the crowd Now all the buildings take control over you. It’s your Father’s bridge that you burn down Now you’ll never know where you belong It's the sign of the time that will remain Better to be alone than feel wrong.
5.
Light Fright 03:58
Back to 1998, when there's a carnival of hate. Such a weird time to live in, wish that Dragon Ball was real. Some people are hard as stone and sometimes I pity for myself, but all the while a great wind carries me across the sky. This is the right time To reveal all the crime Just break that genie lamp Here comes my light fright Does Rock N Roll make you feel alive? Mother smiles and thinks, that's not right.  I look around there's only fools, never really think they're cool. The sun’s not shining in your great phone,  Constantly making you feel numb. Need to find the way out, there's always light in the dark.  This is the right time To reveal all the crime Just break that genie lamp Here comes my light fright, my only light Living in the future makes you scared You live in the past, that makes you sad No one will ever help you but your mind This is the right time To reveal all the crime inside my head Life is for the strong Here comes my light fright, my last wish, my only light.
6.
How So 03:19
There’s a thundering rain in the middle of the night And I remember all my friends who has passed away. I know, I know, no one stays forever. There’s no happiness based on someone else's life And all the crazy thoughts keep circling and go around. I know, I know, no one stays forever. How so? How so? You keep everything on the edge. Now rest all the fire melting down the ice and everything will be alright.
7.
Cake 02:11
This is not my place This is not my throne Not like a cake in each other's face Everything has changed. Decisions have been made This way is mine and that’s yours.
8.
Kairos 03:17
Woebegone Winona, she asked me out tonight. Could this be the end? Her eyes said something about the fear. I look down to her moonstone piece and it’s blindingly bright. We go hide upon the black sheets, nothings gonna change at all. Hole and corner, cloak and dagger, simple matters tell me who you are. These questions answer never end. I can see what is there beneath the skin I can see the world for what it truly is. Voices on a roller coaster ride above my head, I can't tell at all. The reality is upside down. I can see what is there beneath the skin I can see the world for what it is. The only thing for you to do is set me free The only thing to do to sit under the tree.
9.
Sabine 03:19
Far from the truth. You left and came again. What did you expect? I'm lost like a ghost. I was wrong and immature in a quiet funny way, but I don’t have to change, honey please don’t wake me up, I'll sweep you away..... Sabine.

about

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bittersweet 80s melodies and production may not be novel at this point, but Kaveh Kanes' solid songwriting and economical sense of arrangement makes everything here feel sincere. Melodies and lyrics that evoke longing make this a perfect rainy day driving record. Retro in all the right ways. (Jakarta Post)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The beauty of Loanwords is in directness. On its second album, Kaveh Kanes wraps melancholy around longing melodies more purposefully - curating dramatic sadness with twilight guitars and patient ryhthms. Its 80s C86 aesthetic finding new ways to communicate, relying less on a blizzard reverbial blanketss, and more on what made that era's pop so affecting - melodies that wash over the mind as if always having been there, waiting to be discovered.

These feel like soundtrack to experiences everyone goes through, even if Asad Gibran's floating hush takes more comfort in whispering words rather spelling them out. There's a generous humanity here, and the song's simplicity makes it easy to bask in. Lost loves, parental longing, tragic romance, and wondrous glimmers through Loanwords.

Weaker acts bury unprepared songwriting in endless cavernous echoes; but Kaveh Kanes's songs - as confident and beautiful with just a voice and acoustic guitar - built a universe through its glacial here.
